H14 - (Year 11 to Year 12) (FULL SESSION) Foundation Mathematics: Investigations to engage and empower students. - Marilyn Hand
(Year 11 To Year 12)
Session Description
What I love about the new Foundation Mathematics curriculum is that it can enable student growth. By starting with Investigations to pique the students’ interests, we can create opportunities to engage students with the maths that is relevant to them. We can then extend their mathematical skills and knowledge so that they can apply their mathematical thinking to unknown situations. Embedding the Problem-Solving cycle into every Investigation can facilitate the development of students’ analytical thinking. In this workshop we will examine how students can recognise mathematical situations in order to make decisions about the appropriate mathematical tools and processes, and to apply these in contexts that are beyond their direct experiences. We will consider ways to empower students to use their mathematical skills and knowledge with confidence - to metaphorically fold them up, put them in their back pockets, and take them out into the real world.
