Cynthia Nicol, Professor, Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy, University of British Columbia, Vancouver Canada
My research brings together intersecting theories of culturally responsive pedagogies with place-based pedagogies, Indigenous epistemologies and critical mathematics education. My long-term collaborative research with teachers, school administrators, Elders, and community members on Haida Gwaii in the Pacific northwest, has formed the context for much of this work. With community members we developed a living model of culturally responsive education. The books Tluuwaay ‘Waadluxan: Mathematical Adventures and Living Culturally Responsive Mathematics Education with/in Indigenous Communities exemplify some of this work that intends to make mathematics education more relational and responsive for all learners.
